These are the required and recommended settings to ensure proper operation of a Grandstream VOIP handset on our VirtEx PBX. The examples below are from a Grandstream GXP2130 handset.
Firewall / Router Configuration
Ensure that any SIP ALG, or any other SIP / VOIP transformations are disabled on the firewall or router device.
SIP ALG are functions of firewalls designed to help SIP traffic pass through them. However in all cases we are aware of, SIP ALGs actually cause more problems than they solve, for this reason they should always be disabled. An example firewall configuration page for a ZyWALL appliance is shown below.

Account Configuration
Account 1 / General Settings
- Set the SIP Server address to sip.sipcentric.com.
- Enter your VirtEx extension user ID in the SIP User ID and Authenticate ID fields.
- Enter your VirtEx extension password in the Authenticate Password field.
- To program the voicemail button to dial our Voicemail server, specify the code *95, followed by the extension number of the mailbox or extension that you wish to connect to for the Voice Mail User ID field, e.g. *95203 will connect to the mailbox of extention 203, or mailbox 203 if this is configured as a separate mailbox.

|
Account 1 / Network Settings
- Set DNS Mode to SRV as this will allow changes made at the domain level to be picked up automatically by the handset.
- Ensure the NAT Traversal mode is set to Keep-Alive. If this is not set, the handset will suffer from NAT issues if used with a business-grade firewall, and typically will register, but will suffer from one-way audio, or no sound at all.
|
|
Account 1 / SIP Settings / Basic Settings
- Set Register Expiration to 5. This ensure the handset re-registers with our VirtEx servers every five minutes.
|
|
Account 1 / SIP Settings / Security Settings
- Set Check SIP User ID for Incoming INVITE to Yes. This ensures that phantom SIP calls are unable to ring the handset. If this is not set, the handset will receive Direct IP calls or SPIT (SPam from the IntenetT) calls.
|
|
Settings / Date and Time
- Set the NTP Server to be uk.pool.ntp.org.
- Specify the Time Zone to be GMT (or your local time zone).
- We recommend changing the Date Display Format to be dd-mm-yyyy.
